Do i need to buy a cleaning kit for my katana or can i just……….?

your not buying a very expensive katana, so you will not have to clean it very often.

the uchiko you use to remove the old oil so it is needed.

oil was used to prevent the katana from rusting. oil from your fingers needed to be removed from the blade to prevent rusting also. this is why you never touch the blade, i once owned an 300 yr old katana with a perfect finger print rusted into it.

You have NO need to take the sword apart, you Never clean under the tsuka (handle) even antique swords are never clean there that part is suppose to rust, it helps in determining the age of the sword.
the only time you remove the tsuka is to appraise a sword of to repair it. other wise you have no need to do this.

nwohioguy is right you need to find a good instructor to show you what to do. there is a lot of information you are missing. and it would take several books to explain it to you.
